Missing a tooth or several teeth may ruin the appearance of your teeth. In such cases, a patient may require dental implants to improve the appearance of their oral cavity and correct the functioning of the teeth. Dental implant surgery involves implanting a dental implant body into the jaw bone, placing dental implant abutment over the dental implant body. The dental implant abutment extends all the way up to the jaw, and the dental implant( crown) gets placed above it. The crown resembles natural teeth and gives a natural look.

Fort Lauderdale dental implants are implanted using local anesthesia to minimize the pain as the implant requires drilling into the jaw bone to make space for the dental implant body. Therefore, it is highly essential to numb the area being treated.

Working on dental implants.

Implanting a dental implant is a multi-step procedure.

  • The damaged tooth has to be removed if present.
  • Grafting of the jaw bone is required.
  • Implanting the dental implant body into the jaw bone and waiting for the jaw bone to grow around the implant body.
  • Once the bone has grown around the dental implant body, the dental implant abutment is placed above the dental implant body.
  • The dental implant abutment extends to the gums, and the dental implant(crown) is placed over it.

How painful is the procedure?

The procedure has been mentioned briefly above. The procedure may require a few weeks to a few months, depending on person to person. Moreover, the procedure may involve anywhere between 4-6 steps.

Depending upon the severity of the case, a patient may require local or general anesthesia to keep up with the pain. General anesthesia is very potent, and the person falls asleep during the procedure, while the patient remains awake during the process in the case of local anesthesia. However, the pain or discomfort felt in local anesthesia is minimal.

In cases where the dental implant body is implanted into the jaw bone, anesthesia is mandatory. Moreover, during the period of jaw bone growth around the dental implant body, a patient might feel some pain. The pain felt is similar to pain felt in the case of growing pains.

In some cases, local anesthesia might be required while implanting a dental implant and the abutment.

Does a patient feel pain after a dental implant?

Once the effect of anesthesia is over, a patient starts feeling pain, but the pain is manageable. While implanting the abutment, a patient may also feel pain. However, a person may bear the pain comfortably with painkillers and other medications.
