Social Media Leads to Body shaming

Have you ever seen those advertisements that keep telling you about losing weight in 30 days, getting a perfect fit and fine body in 45 days, get instant and slim body within weeks? 

Without knowing about you, they simply comment on your appearance. This is an example of body shaming. You may even find you start to criticize yourself and begin to look at your body in a negative way. There is a misconception that this only happens to women but it also affects men, both have to face this criticism, society criticizes all genders based on their appearance, body, hair loss, and sexual health concerns. 

Nowadays everyone uses social media because it is a platform that connects us to people and gives us information about what’s going happening in the world. According to a study, there are 3 billion social media users worldwide. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook allow you to connect to influencers, motivational coaches, brands, and fitness gurus. Although they can have a positive impact on your lifestyle many people begin to dislike their body and appearance. This leads to a big impact on one’s self-esteem and confidence. 

Chemist click has recently launched a campaign that looks at how the ‘ideal’ male body has changed throughout history. The ‘ideal’ body simply doesn’t exist, there is not one size fit all! As modern-day technology continues to advance, we should be looking at how we can use social media to add value and positivity into our daily lives, instead of it affecting our confidence. 

According to a survey, 31% of men are not happy with their bodies. Is this not a big percentage? Is it not demotivating people? The following are ways to overcome body shaming.

  • Social media literacy: 

Make students aware about social media literacy, by organising campaigns and programs. This is very important to ensure that students and people learn about the effects of social media when ued in a negative way.
