Everywhere it is written about the beneficial effect of turmeric on our organism. However, this can also cause some unpleasant side effects. These may occur mainly in people who overdo it with its consumption or simply ordered it too much.
Yellow spice, which is an important ingredient in the curry mix, comes from a plant of the same name belonging to the same family as ginger. Turmeric, Latin Curcuma longa, is an important part of some culinary traditions. It contains a lot of antioxidants and also the active substance curcumin. This is associated with a reduction in the risk of cancer and inflammation, with a calming effect on the stomach, and even with the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. But along with many beneficial effects, turmeric also brings side effects. Especially those who like to consume it in bulk should be informed about them.
What can happen to you if you overdo it with turmeric eating?
Risk of bleeding
Active substances occurring in turmeric are capable of affecting blood coagulation, which can be dangerous for persons with blood coagulation disorders or other medical abnormalities associated with blood. Excessive consumption can also be problematic for the elderly. This is one of the worst side effects of turmeric.
Stomach problems
Because fillers such as manioc starch or wheat flour are used in the manufacture of certain powdered supplements containing turmeric, it is possible that people intolerant to gluten or celiac disease may respond to such dietary supplements with unpleasant gastrointestinal problems. When taking food supplements, therefore, always carefully read the composition, so you do not unknowingly harm.
Allergic reactions
Increased consumption of turmeric may even be manifested as an extreme allergic reaction. This may include itchy skin, redness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence and convulsions.
Headache
It is known that high doses of turmeric may cause headaches in some individuals. Especially if they ingest more than 500 mg of turmeric per dose. Food supplements often contain even higher doses, which is understandable. Indeed, the substance for which turmeric is so popular, curcumin, is only a few percent present in turmeric. As curcumin reduces pain you can have the best deal.
What does all this mean?
Do you have to stop taking your favorite spice or consume it with fear of possible side effects?
Definitely not. Just remember, as with everything, that nothing should be exaggerated. And you know what they say about healthy food – I think it’s pretty good. Just because something is healthy doesn’t mean you can eat as much as you can think of. If, after all, you decide to consume a higher amount of turmeric, you are more likely to go for some quality food supplement that contains pure standardized extract and you know exactly where you are.
